Singing With Meaning - SEND Vocal Resource

“As part of our school’s focus on pupil wellbeing and developing their emotional regulation and literacy, we have used a number of songs and ideas from the Tri-borough Music Hub’s ‘Singing With Meaning’ resource. It has been hugely popular with pupils and staff alike and has particularly helped younger pupils name and share their feelings, as well as develop strategies for regulating their feelings. I would highly recommend it as a resource to support all children in school, as well those with SEND.” Ellie Hardisty, Assistant Head, Fox Primary School (RBKC)

Singing With Meaning is a freely availably resource launched in September 2020 commissioned, written, and produced by the Tri-borough Music Hub, with funding support from the Ingles Charitable Trust.

The resource is a package that includes:
 # Lyrics
 # Notated sheet music
 # Audio files for all songs
 # Supporting videos for all songs
There are also bonus resources on this page in the shape of additional videos, schedules, and suggested tasks/activities.

The initial inception behind it was to create a song-bank that would be accessible to pupils with Additional and/or Special Education Needs or Disabilities to support emotional regulation.

There are 20 songs, all originals (written by Emily Stratford and Gabriel Kain), and we have split the songs into 5 categories – music songs; topic themes; emotional regulation; transition; and celebration – that cover a range of different moments in the day of a student. They are intended to help support students cope with the many challenging aspects to everyday life that they might experience.

We started writing the songs in July 2019 and finished them in December 2019. The recording and production of this resource began in early January 2020 which coincided with the rise of the global Coronavirus pandemic. Clearly, everyone has been affected in some way by the virus and it became apparent that there would be a potential impact for all students as and when they returned to school (e.g. feelings of anxiety). Therefore, we believe that this resource has a place in supporting a restorative curriculum that all students can access to help them steer a way through their school day.

We are immensely proud of the SWM resource and the impact that it has had on multiple schools, pupils and families. We would love this to get a wider audience so please do share.

About the hub.

The Tri-borough Music Hub is a centralised Local Authority service which receives core funding from Arts Council England. It is the lead organisation that oversees the delivery of music education in three West London boroughs: the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea; the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham; and City of Westminster. We work with schools, children and young people and the music workforce.
